Ho Chi Minh City (also known by its former name Saigon) is the largest city in Vietnam in terms of population and scale of urbanization. This is also the center of economy, politics, culture and education in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City is a city directly under the central government belonging to a special urban type of Vietnam along with the capital Hanoi. After the fall of the Republic of Vietnam in the event of April 30, 1975, the Republic of South Vietnam took over the government and decided to merge the capital city of Saigon and Gia Dinh province into the city of Saigon - Gia Dinh.
